Steven Schwartz, 54, was indicted last month on seven counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, according to the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, though the official charge will not be unsealed until Thursday, June 14, officials noted.
The Poughkeepsie resident was arrested in May following an investigation of an incident between Schwartz and a student at Fishkill Plains Elementary School, according to state police. He is due to be arraigned in Dutchess County Court on Thursday.
Since his arrest, Schwartz, who has been a second-grade teacher in the Wappingers Central School District for three decades, has resigned his position and “will not be returning to work,” school officials stated. His resignation is effective as of June 30.
The Fishkill Plains Elementary School teacher has been on paid administrative leave for several months, and will continue to do so until his resignation is effective.
Schwartz’s arrest came following an investigation by state police, the Dutchess County Child Advocacy Center and the school district determined that Schwartz was found in possession of child pornography on his personal devices, police said.
